Udayan Borthakur is a conservation geneticist with professional experience of more than two decades. From 2012 until his current position as Organizing Secretary in 2023, he is a member of Aaranyak’s Executive Committee. In 2008, he established Aaranyak’s own Wildlife Genetic Laboratory, which he currently leads as Director and Head of the Wildlife Genetics Division of the organization.  He is a wildlife forensic expert recognized by the Govt. of Assam under Section 329 (4) of BNSS 2023. In the region, the Wildlife Genetics Laboratory of Aaranyak and its Director are the sole facility and expert recognized under the act for the purpose of forensic DNA analysis of wildlife crime cases.

Udayan Borthakur works on population genetics of various threatened species in India and abroad. He has prior experience working with the University of Chicago, USA, Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun and Bombay Natural History Society. He is a member of IUCN SSC Asian Rhino Specialist Group and IUCN SSC Heron Specialist Group.

Udayan Borthakur is an avid wildlife photographer for past two decades and his photography work can be seen in several magazines, books and media outlets of national and international repute. He has extensive experience of mentoring budding photographers and has served as the official Wildlife Photography Mentor of Nikon School India for nearly one decade. He is also a member of Nikon Professional Services. He has filmed several wildlife documentaries and his first film ‘Legends of Hollongapar” has received accolade and recognition at both national and international level.
