Job Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities of this position are:

  • planning, managing, monitoring, coordinating, documentation and reporting, stakeholder engagement and timely execution of activities of assigned project.
  • To Assist the division’s head of Environment Education & Capacity Building Division in management and administration of project activities of the division.

The Role:

We are currently seeking a highly motivated, organised individual who has experience in project management. This is a diverse role to assist the day to day running of the Pygmy Hog Conservation Programme.  The post holder will need to have an interest and passion for conservation, strong organizational and communication skills, as well as experience in coordinating team members.  The role holder will help in coordinating programme operations and staff to achieve. The role holder’s duties will include supporting the PHCP Director in the day to day running of the programme: administrative tasks for the programme (overseeing team logistics, procurement), financial administration (managing staff accounts and supporting documents, data entry and monitoring of grant budgets) , supporting grant management (compiling reports from team leaders, compiling data to monitor spend against budget, tracking report deadlines ) ; basic office management (including cloud-based storage). If the post holder has relevant technical qualifications or experience, they may be required to feed in to fundraising efforts such as writing of grant proposals. The role may also input into the development of rewilding plans for Assam and helping to track the progress of activities. The Pygmy Hog Conservation Programme (PHCP) is a partnership project, implemented by Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, Aaranyak and the Forest Department, Government of Assam.

The state of Assam and Meghalaya presently harbours around 6000 elephants in various protected areas, reserved forests and community lands. The habitats of elephant are severely encroached by people and the historical corridors are blocked. In most areas, elephant tend to live with local people with high intensity of conflict. Human elephant conflict (HEC) threatens lives and livelihoods of people and elephants alike. There has been an increase, both in frequency and intensity of such incidents in Assam in the last decade. Since 2017 to 2021, a total of 395 people died because of HEC; while more than 250 elephants died because of human-induced reasons such as poaching, electrocution, train collision etc. Aaranyak has been tirelessly working towards conservation elephants with aim to facilitate coexistence in major HEC hotspots, monitoring movement of elephants and population trends.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conducting systematic data collection of elephant population, distribution, and habitats uses.
  2. Following radio collared elephants and collection of data on habitat use, HEC and behavior activities.

The Natural Resource Management programme of Aaranyak is planning to initiate extensive applied research on restoration of natural habitats and landscapes in NE India region to understand and develop appropriate and habitat specific restoration models that can be replicated across larger landscapes. Agroforestry is considered as one of the major practices for degraded landscape restoration leading to economic and ecological security for local communities. The proposed research should ideally ensure that knowledge and practices available with experts, agencies and local communities are collated, synthesized and applied in practice as small models to learn and document the process of agroforestry for restoration in a specific habitat or landscape. Followed by the experiments the best models should be replicable widely and extensively to restore larger degraded habitats and landscapes. The applied research should lead to quality publications and into PhD. The researcher should be competent or have basic skills to perform the following responsibilities with minimum guidance from the supervisor.

Background of work:

Human-elephant conflict (HEC) threatens elephants as well as lives and livelihoods of people in Assam. We are aiming to facilitate coexistence in major HEC hotspots in upper Assam such as Jorhat, Tinsukia, Majuli by empowering communities through:

  • Educating and sensitising villagers about elephants, HEC and protecting people/property/elephants/biodiversity.

Project Background: Globally, habitat degradation and destruction are the biggest threat that wildlife is facing currently. To protect the highly threatened species and safeguard human well-being, it is essential that we work towards habitat recovery and enrichment through ecosystem restoration approach. We, at Aaranyak has initiated habitat restoration at various places, primarily in Manas National Park, eastern buffer of Chirang Ripu Elephant Reserve and Nagaon district in Assam, with a plan to expand our work in other areas as well. The goal of this initiative is to protect and revive degraded habitats to ensure long-term conservation of threatened fauna and ensure ecosystem services to local communities.

Job Purpose: We are looking for a biologist, preferably with Botany/Forestry background or thorough knowledge on vegetation with an objective to collect various ecological data on habitat across Aaranyak’s various field sites to facilitate long term habitat monitoring and restoration. The candidate needs to collect vegetation data, conduct basic field taxonomy (of plants) and maintain database of the same. The trainee will have the following roles and responsibilities, but not limited to-

  • Collecting systematic data on vegetation/habitat parameters/environmental parameters using standard datasheets
  • Monitoring habitat management plots
  • Use various devices such as GPS or mobile tracking to facilitate data collection
  • Management of data and basic analysis and report writing

He/She will be provided with basic accommodation and food during fieldwork at our basecamps during the training period. Research Fellow in Restoration Ecology with opportunity for PhD Degree

Background:

The Natural Resource Management programme of Aaranyak is planning to initiate extensive applied research on ecorestoration of degraded habitats and landscapes in NE India region to understand and develop appropriate and habitat specific restoration models that can be replicated across larger landscapes. The research should ideally ensure that all knowledge and practices available with experts, agencies and local communities are collated, synthesized and applied in practice as small models to learn and document the process of restoration in a specific habitat or landscape. Followed by the experiments the best models should be replicable widely and extensively to restore larger degraded habitats and landscapes. The applied research should lead to quality publications and into PhD theses. The researcher/s should be competent or have basic skills to perform the following responsibilities with minimum guidance from the supervisor.

This position is open to Indian National only and preference will be given to candidates from indigenous communities.

Responsibilities:

  1. Action research that leads to direct restoration of forests/habitats in degraded forested landscapes.
  2. Review of literature on forestry, agroforestry and restoration ecology to prepare appropriate notes for local strategic planning.

Volunteer opportunity for conservation of Asian elephant in Meghalaya

Duration: 1st March to 30 June 2022

Aaranyak is launching research and conservation-based project on the Asian elephants in Meghalaya. The project aims to conduct occupancy modelling, population monitoring surveys and inter-state movement of elephants covering the entire protected area network and community forests across the state. The survey includes rigorous fieldwork in hilly and rough terrain to collect data on Asian elephants.

Applications are invited from India citizens, preferably young, dynamic and enthusiastic persons willing to contribute to the cause of conservation of elephants in Meghalaya. The opportunity will be a voluntary service with support limited to food and moderate lodging facilities in field, medical insurance during fieldwork. Prior experience of working in harsh conditions like in hilly terrain, climbing for hours in wildlife habitats, knowledge on local Khasi, Garo and Jayantia languages will be preferred.

The volunteer will support with data collection and management along with a team of biologists from Aaranyak. During fieldwork, the entire team will be accompanied by staff from the Department.

Knowledge and Experiences expected:

1. About PHCP:

The Pygmy Hog Conservation Programme (PHCP) is a partnership project, implemented by Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, Aaranyak and the Forest Department, Government of Assam. PHCP was founded in 1995 by Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in collaboration with the IUCN/SSC Pig Specialist Group, Assam Forest Department and the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India.

The goal of the programme is to protect and restore wild populations of the Endangered pygmy hog and its threatened sub-Himalayan grassland habitat, and in doing so protect other grassland-dependent species and the valuable ecosystem services that healthy grasslands provide for local communities.  Major activities under the PHCP include conservation breeding and reintroduction of pygmy hogs, post release monitoring, grassland management and restoration in the release sites, and community engagement to reduce anthropogenic pressures on the grasslands, primarily around Manas National Park (MNP).

2. Job description:

The candidates need to review selected literature on hunting records along with documenting historical natural history trends from 1850 to 1970 in erstwhile Cooch Behar state and Western Assam. The review comprises of hunting diary review, review of colonial forest records, Open-source search for photographic evidence and digitization of data points corresponding with present day spatial locations. The objective of the study is to enumerate and create a historical database of Sub Himalayan natural history for present day North Bengal and Western Assam.

Advertisement for Apprentice on Herpetological Researcher in the Northeast India

Herpetofauna Research and Conservation Division (HRCD), Aaranyak

Applications along with CV are invited from interested candidates who would be interested to learn herpetology hands-on and work long term (leading to PhD degree) on extensive ecological research. The work starts with hands-on training as an apprentice for six months which may be converted into a long term PhD oriented research on ecology of amphibians and reptiles for suitable candidates. Interest in herpetofauna and ecological research is a very basic requirement.

Essential Qualification: M.Sc in Zoology/ Wildlife Sciences/ Environmental Science / Life Sciences or other appropriate subjects with a minimum aggregate score of 60%.

Desirable Qualification:

  • Interest in herpetological and ecological research.
  • Able to live and work in remote hill terrain and culture.
  • Have experience of basic review work and field research.
  • Field experience in environmental and biological monitoring.

Description of Research:

  • Carry out literature review of amphibians and reptiles of Northeast India.
  • Expand scope of review to neighbouring regions and countries and prepare databases.
  • Implement field research on ecology of amphibians and reptiles in a himalayan river basin at an altitudinal gradient.
  • Generate species occurrence data using standard techniques and maintain a database.
  • Identification of amphibians and Reptiles using standard taxonomic process.

Duration: Apprentice duration is for six months which may lead to a research fellowship for a PhD program.

Compensation: Three months of the apprentice period is without any compensation. In the later half there will be a lump sum honorarium. Research Fellowship what would follow will be as per standard norms as applicable for JRF.

  1. Lead research on understanding of anthropogenic pressures in MNP, determining its drivers and impacts.

8. Announcement of vacancy in the Geo-Spatial Technology and Application Division (GTAD), Aaranyak

Aaranyak is planning to recruit one young and dynamic person having experience in the field of Remote Sensing, Geographical Information System, GPS for the Geo-spatial Technology and Application Division (GTAD). The detailed information about the vacancy is given below.

Position: Geospatial Analyst

Responsibility:

i). Carry out core mapping and analysis using RS & GIS software

ii).  Carry out field work for and with staff of other divisions of Aaranyak as well as for GTAD in research sites (mainly in North East India and North Bengal Landscape).

iii). Assist Manager, GTAD in writing scientific reports, research papers and imparting short courses on RS/GIS/GPS training and preparation of training manuals.

iv). Assist Manager GTAD in all other RS/GIS/GPS based works and report on daily basis.

Minimum Qualification: (i) Post Graduate in Geo-informatics/Remote Sensing  & GIS/ Geospatial Technology  & 1 year of work experience in these fields(ii) Post Graduate in a relevant subject(i.e. geography, environmental science, geology)  with PG Diploma in Geoinformatics/Remote Sensing  & GIS/ Geospatial Technology & 1 year of work experience in these fields (iii) Post Graduate in a relevant subject(i.e. geography, environmental science, geology)  with 3 years of intensive work experience of application of Geoinformatics/Remote Sensing  & GIS/ Geospatial Technology.

Desired Qualifications:

  1. Knowledge and working experience in handling open source software’s like  QGIS, R, Google Earth Engine
  2. Knowledge and working experience in handling open source software’s for research and application in wildlife science, ecosystem and habitat modelling and hydrological modelling.
  3. ERDAS software, Arc GIS software.
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication in English, Hindi and Assamese.

9. Paid Internship Opportunity at Aaranyak

Aaranyak is seeking Interns to work with its Media Production & Communications Division on developing text as well as multimedia stories on biodiversity and environment issues of Northeast India.

The work involves content research and story idea development, primary as well as secondary data collection and may involve field work for data collection, photography and video documentation.

Qualifications:

Graduate or post-graduate degree in any discipline. Preference will be given to those with good writing experience/ reportage photography and published record of photo essay/ short video productions. Early career freelance journalists are encouraged to apply.

Total Number of Positions & Duration:

Six internship positions each with three months duration. The starting date will be discussed following receiving complete applications. However, we prefer only those applicants who are able to give minimum of three months commitment to the position.

Compensation:

Selected interns will be paid an honorarium of Rs. 5,000/ per month. Food and travel expenses during field work outside Guwahati will be provided by us.

Key responsibilities of this position are:

  • planning, managing, monitoring, coordinating, documentation and reporting, stakeholder engagement and timely execution of activities of assigned project.
  • To Assist the division’s head of Environment Education & Capacity Building Division in management and administration of project activities of the division.
  • Prepare execution plan of all activities for each quarter, review monthly and execute as scheduled and mandated under the supervision of division’s head.
  • To undertake documentation including development of IEC materials as well as develop and implement conservation education strategy, module, training course etc.
  • Liaise and engage with various government departments, media and other key stakeholders and implement project activities.

Qualification:

  • Master’s degree in Life science, Ecology & Environmental science, Anthropology. Other may also apply. (Understanding about social & ecological research, environmental management, biodiversity conservation, social behaviour change communication and scientific temperament requires).
