Background:

The project aims to implement a restoration and reforestation initiative within a mosaic forest-grassland ecosystem and community lands in Bodoland Territorial Council, Assam, India. The primary objective is to contribute to climate mitigation by enhancing carbon sequestration through ecosystem restoration while preserving biodiversity and supporting local communities. This appointment focuses on the feasibility assessment of the project, determining its potential to participate in the voluntary carbon market and assessing its environmental and socio-economic impacts.

Scope of Work:

The consultant will provide technical expertise to assess the feasibility of the carbon market framework for the reforestation and restoration project. This includes carbon stock data analysis, carbon footprint assessments, climate modeling, and emission reduction strategy development. The key tasks include:

  1. Data Collection and Analysis:
    • Collect and compile baseline data on carbon stocks, forest cover, and land-use patterns within the project area.

Project Background: Globally, habitat degradation and destruction are the biggest threats that wildlife is facing currently. To protect the highly threatened species and safeguard human well-being, it is essential that we work towards habitat recovery and enrichment through ecosystem restoration approach. We, at Aaranyak have initiated habitat restoration at various places, primarily in Manas National Park and eastern buffer of Chirang Ripu Elephant Reserve, with a plan to expand our work in other areas as well. The goal of this initiative is to protect and revive degraded habitats and community lands to ensure long-term conservation of threatened fauna and ecosystem services to local communities and ensure livelihood to local communities through afforestation, and habitat management.

Job Purpose: We are looking for an ecologist, preferably with Botany/Forestry/Life Science/Environmental science/Climate Science background or thorough knowledge of vegetation to collect various ecological data on habitat across Aaranyak’s various field sites to facilitate long-term habitat monitoring and restoration. The candidate needs to collect vegetation data, conduct basic field taxonomy (of plants), and maintain a database of the same. The candidate will have the following roles and responsibilities, but not limited to

  • Collecting systematic data on vegetation/habitat parameters/environmental parameters using standard datasheets.
