Project Design Consultant for Restoration & Reforestation in Mosaic Forest-Grassland Ecosystem, Bodoland Territorial Council, Assam (Voluntary Carbon Market feasibility assessment)

Project Duration: 6 months and extendable based on the requirements

Reporting to: Project Lead/Program Manager

Contract Type: Consultancy mode

Background:

The project aims to implement a restoration and reforestation initiative within a mosaic forest-grassland ecosystem and community lands in Bodoland Territorial Council, Assam, India. The primary objective is to contribute to climate mitigation by enhancing carbon sequestration through ecosystem restoration while preserving biodiversity and supporting local communities. This appointment focuses on the feasibility assessment of the project, determining its potential to participate in the voluntary carbon market and assessing its environmental and socio-economic impacts.

Scope of Work:

The consultant will provide technical expertise to assess the feasibility of the carbon market framework for the reforestation and restoration project. This includes carbon stock data analysis, carbon footprint assessments, climate modeling, and emission reduction strategy development. The key tasks include:

  1. Data Collection and Analysis:
    • Collect and compile baseline data on carbon stocks, forest cover, and land-use patterns within the project area.
    • Process and analyze datasets, including emissions, local climate trends, energy consumption, and environmental impacts.
    • Use satellite imagery, GIS, and remote sensing tools to assess the carbon stock of forest and grassland ecosystems.
  2. Carbon Footprint Assessment:
    • Conduct comprehensive carbon footprint assessments for the project’s afforestation and restoration activities.
    • Assess carbon stock changes, including sequestration potential in reforested areas and carbon loss from degraded ecosystems.
    • Quantify the carbon footprint of project-related processes and activities, ensuring accuracy for potential carbon market participation.
  3. Risk Assessment:
    • Assess potential climate risks that could affect the project, such as temperature increases, changing rainfall patterns, and extreme weather events.
    • Identify opportunities for adaptation and mitigation to enhance the project’s resilience to climate impacts.
  4. Emission Reduction Strategies:
    • Collaborate with the project team and cross-functional experts to develop strategies for reducing carbon emissions from project activities.
    • Recommend best practices for improving energy efficiency and promoting sustainable land management.
    • Provide guidance on integrating nature-based solutions (e.g., agroforestry, sustainable grazing) to enhance carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation.
  5. Feasibility Assessment Reporting:
    • Prepare a comprehensive feasibility assessment report that includes baseline carbon stock data, climate risks, carbon footprint analysis, and emission reduction opportunities.
    • Document the potential for the project to participate in voluntary carbon markets, outlining certification pathways (e.g., VCS, Gold Standard).
    • Provide recommendations for the next steps, including the viability of moving into full-scale project implementation.

Deliverables:

  1. Baseline carbon stock data and analysis report.
  2. Comprehensive carbon footprint assessment report.
  3. Climate modeling and risk assessment report, including mitigation and adaptation recommendations. Recommendations for emission reduction strategies tailored to the restoration and reforestation activities.
  4. Feasibility assessment report, outlining potential for voluntary carbon market participation.

Required Qualification and Experience:

  • Advanced postgraduate degree in Environmental Science, Forestry, Climate Science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in carbon accounting, carbon footprint analysis, and working with voluntary carbon markets.
  • Familiarity with tools like GIS, remote sensing, and climate modeling software.
  • Expertise in emission reduction strategies, climate adaptation, and mitigation.
  • Excellent communication and report-writing skills.
  • Experience in feasibility assessments for forest restoration or reforestation projects is highly desirable.

Location: Protected Areas in Assam- Manas National Park, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and community land of Bodoland Territorial Council 

Project Background: Globally, habitat degradation and destruction are the biggest threats that wildlife is facing currently. To protect the highly threatened species and safeguard human well-being, it is essential that we work towards habitat recovery and enrichment through ecosystem restoration approach. We, at Aaranyak have initiated habitat restoration at various places, primarily in Manas National Park and eastern buffer of Chirang Ripu Elephant Reserve, with a plan to expand our work in other areas as well. The goal of this initiative is to protect and revive degraded habitats and community lands to ensure long-term conservation of threatened fauna and ecosystem services to local communities and ensure livelihood to local communities through afforestation, and habitat management.

Job Purpose: We are looking for an ecologist, preferably with Botany/Forestry/Life Science/Environmental science/Climate Science background or thorough knowledge of vegetation to collect various ecological data on habitat across Aaranyak’s various field sites to facilitate long-term habitat monitoring and restoration. The candidate needs to collect vegetation data, conduct basic field taxonomy (of plants), and maintain a database of the same. The candidate will have the following roles and responsibilities, but not limited to

  • Collecting systematic data on vegetation/habitat parameters/environmental parameters using standard datasheets.
  • Assist in conducting comprehensive assessments of climate-data analysis, carbon accounting, processes, and products.
  • Guide the community in afforestation/restoration and nursery management
  • Monitoring habitat management plots
  • Use tools such as GPS or mobile applications to facilitate data collection.

Aaranyak is seeking an experienced and dedicated individual to the position of Senior Manager, Elephant Research and Conservation. This crucial role requires a candidate with a profound passion for elephant conservation, possessing a minimum of 15 years of hands-on experience in this field. The successful candidate must have served in a lead role, demonstrating their ability to manage and drive conservation initiatives effectively. Should also have communication and administrative skills.

Relevant Qualifications and Experiences:

  • Experiences working on elephant conservation : The ideal candidate should hold an M.Sc. in Zoology, Wildlife Biology etc with a minimum of 15 years of experience working on elephant research and conservation. Preference will be given to applicants with prior experience in Assam and Northeast India and managing large elephant conservation projects of national and international donors.
  •  National-level exposure : The candidate must have extensive experience working at the national level, with a thorough understanding of regional elephant conservation challenges, policies, and actions.
  • Research and publications : The candidate should have experience publishing scientific papers demonstrating their contributions towards elephant conservation knowledge, at national and global level.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project management: The Senior Manager will be responsible for managing ongoing projects on elephant research and conservation on a day to day basis and shall make regular field visits to monitor and evaluate project activities at various sites.
  •  Fundraising : The Senior Manager along with Division Head shall write project proposals, visit donors from time to time and establish new contacts with potential donors and others for fundraising.
  • Develop and implement strategic conservation plans : The Senior Manager will be responsible for formulating comprehensive conservation strategies aimed at elephant conservationand alsofacilitating mitigation of human-elephant conflict along with Division Head and other team members in the Northeast and other states of Eastern India.
  • Policy advocacy and engagement : The candidate will lead policy advocacy efforts, collaborating with government bodies, conservation organizations, and stakeholders to influence favourable policies for elephant conservation.
  • Research and innovation : Conducting and promoting research in elephant conservation, the Senior Manager will stay at the forefront of scientific advancements in the field.
  • Capacity building and team management : The candidate will work along with and guide a team of dedicated conservationists, providing guidance, support, and training to enhance their effectiveness in implementing conservation initiatives.
  •  Stakeholder coordination : Collaborating with Government agencies, international organizations, research institutions, and local communities, the Senior Manager will foster partnerships to ensure a holistic approach to elephant conservation.
  • Documentation, writing reports, and papers : The Senior Manager will be responsible for drafting and reviewing various project reports, annual reports, case studies, scientific papers, social media contentetc past and present elephant research and conservation activities with the help of other team members.

Job Responsibilities:

  • To assess current population and conservation status of target avian species in various places of Assam.
  • To undertake field survey for detecting nesting and roosting sites for target avian species in Assam.
  • To assist senior Scientist at Aaranyak in developing Species Distribution Models for target avian species.
  • To coordinate amongst various conservation stakeholders and assist in development of species management plan for target avian species in Assam.

Qualification:

  • Master’s degree in relevant disciplines of biological sciences including Zoology, Botany, Wildlife Sciences etc.

Desired Experience:

  • Experience on various methods on bird monitoring and good knowledge on birds of Northeast India with identification skills.
  • Qualitative and quantitative analytical skills.
  • Experience of fieldwork in Assam and ability to work in difficult physical conditions.

d. Maintain Public Relation with local communities and community leaders.
